![]() |
The following article discusses how to use the VPN client on Macintosh OS X 10.2 - 10.5.
This article assumes that you have a properly installed and configured wireless network adapter on your Macintosh-based computer (OS X 10.2 - 10.5). If you have not yet installed or configured your wireless adapter, first follow the instructions provided by your wireless network card manufacturer, then return to these instructions. If you are having problems with the installation or configuration of your wireless network card, contact the manufacturer of your wireless network adapter.
This article also assumes that you have successfully installed and configured the VPN client. If you have not installed or configured the VPN client, first follow the instructions in the article "Installing the VPN Client", then return to these instructions.
Steps for logging on for wireless internet access with the new VPN System
The new VPN system for wireless internet access campus-wide requires you to have a Kerberos ID. For students who already know your Kerberos ID, then skip the next section (if you already have an SIU e-mail account, or you have accessed other computer labs across campus such as Morris Library or Faner, then you already have a Kerberos ID. Your login information is the same).
- When you initially turn on the laptop, the VPN service program will automatically start up, and after a few moments a window will appear on the desktop like this:
- You then have two choices for your login information: either SIUC-Staff, or SIUC Student. Click on student, as shown above, then click on connect in the upper left of the dialog box:
- After you click connect, a dialog box will appear, where you will enter your Kerberos ID username and password. Once you have entered your information in the appropriate boxes, click on OK:
- It will briefly say authenticating user in the lower left portion of the dialog box, then it should say Connected to SIUC-Student. You are now on-line and can open your web browser such as Internet Explorer to navigate the web.
- You can hide the VPN status window by minimizing it by clicking on the yellow circle in the upper left hand corner of the window:
Disconnecting from the SIUC Wireless Network
- When you are done using your computer, be sure to click on disconnect in the upper right-hand corner of the dialog box to log off. Otherwise, additional people may use the internet logged in under your account:
- If you have minimized the dialog window, you can get it to appear again by clicking on the VPN logo in the dock.
