Question 1 :
What is a SSID and what should mine be set too?Answer 1 :
The SSID is a name that is used by the wireless card to talk to the network. This is similar to a normal conversation, if your name is spoken to you listen and participate in the conversation. If someone elses name is spoken to then you may or may not listen. The SIUC Campus has set a few names to be consistent all across campus. They are listed below. "SIUC-iv" (without the quotes) for the indoor wireless
"SIUC-ov" (without the quotes) for the outdoor wireless
"SIUC-ov2" (without the quotes) for the outdoor wireless

Question 2 :
What does the 'SIUC-iv' and 'SIUC-ov' really mean?Answer 2 :
These are simply names for Southern Illinois University - Indoor VPN and then Outdoor VPN.
Question 3 :
What username and password do I use, and how do I get one if I'm a new Student/Faculty/Staff??Answer 3 :
This uses your Kerberos ID and Password, the same one you use to check your "username@siu.edu" email. If you are a new Student/Faculty/Staff and you have not set your account up please goto CLC1 or the Customer Service Center to get this created and instructions on how to use other Campus Networking resources.
Question 4 :
What should I see and have access to before I login via the VPN Client?Answer 4 :
Verify you have a 10.x.x.x IP via DHCP (ipconfig for XP/NT, winipcfg for 98, ifconfig for Linux and Macintosh)
You should be able to ping your default gateway (ping 10.8.9.254, assuming this is the default gateway)
You should be able to ping 131.230.76.176, 131.230.76.177, and 131.230.76.178 (these are the IPs of the VPN Concentrators that will be allowing access once you connect with the VPN Client)
You should be able to ping 131.230.9.26 (This is the webserver)
If you open up a web browser you should ONLY be allowed to see the webpages on the above mentioned web server. These webpages will allow you access to download the necessary client utilities and profiles needed to log into the system. As well as provide help via the Documentation section and Release Notes section.

Question 7 :
After installing the Macintosh VPN Client and I click on Connect I only get an OK button, what is wrong?Answer 7 :
After installing the VPN Client you must restart your Macintosh computer
The Wireless Network settings must be set to Auto or "SIUC-iv", "SIUC-ov", or "SIUC-ov2"
DHCP must be enabled for the Wireless Network settings
The VPN Profile must have been imported properly
Question 8 :
I've installed the client and imported the Profiles properly and when I click connect and supply my username/password it immediately disconnects with little or no error message, what else can I try?Answer 8 :
The user ID and Profiles are dynamically set outside of IT control. In rare cases try other profiles instead of the one you have already imported. Ie if you are Staff and you must use the Student profile instead, this can occur if you are signed up for classes and are also a full time Faculty/Staff.
Question 9 :
I've verified that my IP information is correct, I can ping the necessary IPs but my web browser is not coming up with any webpages and I am using the wireless on campus, what is wrong?Answer 9 :
What is the default webpage set to in the web browser that you are using? It needs to be http:// if it's ftp:// or https:// then it will just timeout.
http://www.siu.edu (this will work fine and you will be presented with the intercept web pages)
https://webmail.siu.edu (this will timeout and show no webpages)
ftp://ftp.siu.edu (this will timeout and show no webpages)
Question 10 :
Everything installed fine but I'm experiencing weird connection problems, VPN Software just scrolling and never connecting, connecting but not being able to connect to anything but my assigned IP, what can I do now?Answer 10 :
The most common fix for this type of connectivity problems is to download and install the latest NIC Driver for the Wireless NIC you are using. Below are a Few that we have run across with the Drivers that fixed the specific models. (Some of the drivers may be XP ONLY drivers)
Linksys WPC11 version 4
Linksys WPC54G
Netgear MA521 (drivers for all Windows platforms ONLY)
Question 11 :
My Macintosh VPN Client is giving me an error while trying to connect, "Error 413 - VPN Authorization". What can I do?Answer 11 :
Remove all Profiles by clicking on each profile in the Cisco VPN Client and then clicking on delete. Then download and re-import the profile via the Operating System Install directions.
Question 12 :
I'm receiving "Error - SubSystem not available", What does this mean and what can I do?Answer 12 :
This simply means that you can not talk to the VPN Concentrators. Refer to Question 4 for more details.
Question 13 :
I have Wireless at home and I am having trouble connecting or once connected trouble getting any access past the VPN Connection itself, what else can I check?Answer 13 :
In one case the user reported having a "LinkSys Wireless G router" and they were able to fix their connectivity problem by enabling IPSEC Passthrough in the wireless/router config.
NOTE : If connecting from home keep in mind that once connected to the VPN you have a dedicated tunnel to Campus. Meaning that you will tunnel all traffic via this VPN Connection. If you have printers or network shares at home you will not be able to access any of these via the network until you disconnect your VPN Connection first.
Question 14 :
I have the Cisco VPN Client installed and once I click connect on the Cisco VPN Client and provide my username and password my Windows crashes and gives a Blue Screen. Is there anything I can do?Answer 14 :
NOTE : To date this has been caused due to some other Security related Software installed prior to the Cisco VPN Client being installed. Some reports have seen Sygate Firewall Software, F-Secure Software, and in some cases Norton and McAfee have been reported as well.
Do the following : (restart the computer as needed)
Uninstall the Cisco VPN Client
Uninstall the Security Software (F-secure for example)
Restart the computer (even if not prompted to)
Install the Cisco VPN Client
Install the Security Software (F-secure for example)
Question 15 :
Windows will not let me Uninstall/Remove the Cisco VPN Client, how can I safely remove it?Answer 15 :
The Customer Support Center has the directions provided by Cisco for this procedure. Please call them to aid in this removal. Parts of the Removal requires editing the Windows registry and if not done properly can render Windows unstable and sometimes completely unusable.
Customer Support Center : 453-5155
Question 16 :
After installing the Windows client and profile correctly and clicking on the Connect button all I get is "Authenticating User" (Profiles are also imported correctly), what can I do?Answer 16 :
Check what version of Windows Cisco VPN Client you are running. To do this open the Cisco VPN Client and click on Help (in the menu bar) and then click on 'About VPN Client'. This will tell you what version of the VPN Client you currently using. If it's 4.0.4 then please download the 4.8.01 version. Then click on Control panel and remove the existing Cisco VPN Client. Once removed reboot and then install the 4.0.5 version in the same steps as listed on the Step 1 and Step 2 for XP.
Question 17 :
